Biography

Middle distance runner Noel Carroll bettered the European record over 880 yard in 1961, and was recruited to run for Villanova University (Philadelphia). There, he anchored the university team that bettered the 4×880 yard World Record in 1964. He won three consecutive European indoor titles (1966-1968) but did not fare well in international outdoor events. He did gain three British AAA titles, as well as eight Irish championships (five in the 800 m/880 y, three in the 440 y). Carroll had left school and joined the army at age 13, but went on to become a broadcaster, journalist, and eventually became chief executive at the Dublin Chamber of Commerce. He died of a heart attack after his morning jog.

Personal Bests: 400 – 46.83 (1968); 800 – 1:46.6y (1968).
