Carleton was a veteran of both World Wars, and his career was as a lawyer. In 1931, he and fellow Olympian Charles Proctor earned a measure of fame in their native New Hampshire when they became among the first to climb and ski the headwall at Tuckerman’s Ravine. He also worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps to help develop 15 ski trails in New Hampshire.
