Biography

Slava Bykov began his hockey career with Traktor Chelyabinsk in 1979 and joined CSKA Moskva in 1983, playing there until 1990. With CSKA Moskva Bykov won seven Soviet titles in a row (1983-89) and eight consecutive European Champions Cup titles (1983-90). He was also selected on the best line of the Soviet Championships in 1988 and 1990. In 1990 Bykov joined HC Fribourg-Gottéron in Switzerland and played there until 1998, and was the leading goal scorer at the Switzerland Championships in 1991-92 and 1994. Bykov finished his career in 1998-2000, playing with Lausanne HC. Internationally, besides his two Olympic gold medals, Bykov was World Champion five times (1983, 1986, 1989-90, 1993) and European champion six times (1983, 1985-87, 1989, 1991). Bykov also won silvers at the 1987 World Championships, 1990 European Championships and 1987 Canada Cup, and won bronzes at the 1985 and 1991 World Championships. After his sporting career, Bykov has worked as an ice hockey coach. He was coach of HC Fribourg-Gottéron from 2000-04 and from 2004-09 was head coach of CSKA Moskva. Since 2006, Bykov has been head coach of the Russian national ice hockey team and since 2009 has also been head coach of Salavat Yulayev Ufa.
