Biography

Gail Borden’s family heritage contains the best and the worst of it. He was the great-grandson of Gail Borden, who founded Borden Milk, and he grew up wealthy. But he was also a distant relative of Lizzie Borden, who killed her mother and father in Massachusetts with an ax. Borden placed third at the 1932 US Nationals to make the 1932 Winter Olympic team. He competed at the 1930 World Championships, placing sixth, and the 1934 Worlds, placing eighth. In 1950 he settled in Winter Park, Florida, where he became a radio and television sports personality, known for his nationally syndicated show, “The Sportsman Club,” which ran from 1950 to the early 60s. He had started that career in the 1940, when he was featured along with David Newell, then editor of Field & Stream, in a weekly radio broadcast, “Hunting & Fishing Club of the Air.” Borden was known as an avid sportsman, conservationist, and an accomplished wildlife artist. He was a retired securities broker, and was a member of the Maidstone Club of East Hampton, the Devon Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, and the Winter Park Racquet Club.
