For nearly a century, the identity of this shooter remained unknown. He was listed in results as M. van Laan, but also appeared in later works as Van Haan or even Gerardus van Haan. In 1999, Dutch Olympic historian Ton Bijkerk uncovered the names of the Dutch 1900 shooting team in a regional newspaper. There, the name of Dirk Boest Gips surfaced, who was indeed a member of the Dutch shooting federation. Little else is known about Boest Gips, who was a broker who lived in Rotterdam and Den Haag (The Hague). |
