Bennett was also a member of the English team that won the Commonwealth Games title in 1974. After the 1976 Olympics he elected to turn professional with the Carlton-Weinmann team. He spent nearly a decade on the roads and won a stage of the London-to-Glasgow race in 1980 as well as the Tom Simpson Memorial Race in 1981.
