Biography

Gisela Beyer came from a top sporting family. Her brothers Peter and Hans-Georg – who won a gold medal 1980 – were handball players and Udo won Olympic gold in 1976 and bronze in 1980 as a shot putter, and her sister Angelika played handball, while another sister, Gudrun, became physiotherapist for the German fencing team in 1992. Gisela was first married to the hammer thrower Karl-Heinz Reißmüller, and later re-married, only to divorce again. She was educated as a specialized seller of sports articles. Gisela Beyer won East German national titles in the discus throw in 1983-84, and took part in the European Championships in 1982 (fourth) and the World Championships 1983 (fifth).
