Robin Backhaus swam at the 1972 Olympics while a high school student at Redlands High School in California. He later attended the University of Washington, but transferred and graduated from the University of Alabama. His greatest meet came at the 1973 World Championships when he won the 200 metre butterfly and won a gold medal with the US 4x200 free relay. Backhaus won three AAU titles, the 200 yard butterfly indoors in 1973-74, and the 100 metre butterfly in 1973. He also won NCAA titles in the 200 fly in 1974-75. Backhaus later became a teacher and coach, coaching at Konawarena High School in Hawai’i for four years, and teaching in Texas and California for over 20 years. He started age group swimming programs in Texas and at Riverside Aquatic Club in California.
