Biography

Along with Renzo Sambo and coxswain Bruno Cipolla, Primo Baran beat the Netherlands on the artificial lake of Xochimilco to win the gold in the coxed pairs. Rejected by the army, after winning the European Championships the year before, he asked journalists not to write that the federation had given them a gold watch ("The rest of us are amateurs"). At the Games he recovered from a catarrh problem which had bothered his breathing in his early career. Baran also won a World Championship bronze and 2 European Championship silvers, all in the coxed pairs.
