John Barrett was an Irish member of the Polytechnic Harriers and the brother of the tug-of-war Olympic gold medalist, Ned. John Barrett was the Irish shot put champion seven times (IAAA - 1903, 1906-08, 1911; and GAA in 1902), and he won the AAA title in 1911 and 1923. He also briefly held the world record for the 28-lb. and 48-lb. shot put. At the 1908 Olympics he failed to do himself justice after an American competitor accidentally dropped a shot on his foot. His career was a policeman with the Royal Irish Constabulary. Personal Best: SP – 13.88 (1904). |
