Biography

Born in Australia to British parents, Herbert Bateman studied at the Westminster School of Art and Goldsmiths College in New Cross. He began with cartoons which appeared in The Tattler and other magazines. In World War I, he was severely wounded. Thereafter he was known for his cartoons portraying furious indignation of thoughtless or antisocial behavior. Between the wars he worked as a commercial artist. In World War II, he produced posters for various British government departments.
