Rein Aun, whose father died when he was just 13, attended a special school for young athletes as a teenager. He appeared to be a very talented distance runner, yet elected to compete in the decathlon. When commencing his studies, he moved from Tallinn to Tartu, and competed for VSS Kalev. His performance at the 1964 Olympics was outstanding, improving on his personal best score with more than 800 points to win the silver medal. It would remain his only prize, finishing fifth at the 1966 European Championships. He improved his own best to 7,898 points in 1968, but failed to finish the Olympic decathlon later that year.
