Jim Atkinson won many bobsled titles in addition to his Olympic silver medal. In 1950 at the World Championships, he teamed up with Stan Benham, Pat Martin and Bill D'Amico to win the 4-man title. This is one of only three times that the United States has won a world championship outside of Olympic competition. Atkinson represented both the Lake Placid Bobsled Club and the Sno Birds of Lake Placid. Sledding for these clubs, he also was on three North American 4-man champions (1948, 1951 and 1953), and in those same years he slid on the AAU 4-man champion teams. |
