Errata: Minor Stats Corrections Coming to the Site

Posted by admin on July 15, 2013

By the nature of our update process these will take a week or two to roll out to the site, but they'll get there eventually. This note below is from one of our data producers and represent a set of updates we'll be incorporating into the site.

One of the great aspects of the baseball research community is their dogged determination to get things right even it is a mixup between Tom Maher and Frank Mahar in 1902.

Team Travel Maps

Posted by Mike on July 12, 2013

For your offseason Friday enjoyment (only a couple more weeks till training camps!) I put together some team travel maps highlighting the distances each team has to go to away games each year (back to 1970). Compare the Browns' 6,578 miles traveled (round-trip) with the 28,268 miles Seattle travels in 2013.

Career and Single-Season Triple Double Leaders

Posted by Neil on July 11, 2013

Just in case you missed this last month year, we now offer the option to search for double- and triple-doubles using the Player Game Finder tool. Under "Additional Criteria", just check the box next to "Double-Double" or "Triple-Double", and you'll be able to find games that match any combination of points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks that meet the criteria you're looking for.

As an example, here are the career leaders in Triple-Doubles since 1985-86 (the first year we have complete boxscore data):

As you can see, Jordan's stints away from the game have been included in the table. In most cases we have been able to identify a reason the player did not play (injury, retirement, other league, etc.) and will note that in the row.

If you have any questions or comments about this addition or anything else, please let us know.

Leaderboard Carousel on B-R

Posted by admin on July 3, 2013

Baseball-Reference.com - MLB Stats, Standings, Scores, History.

Nothing too big, but our man on PFR, Mike Kania has put together a nice simple carousel for us that will show the major leaderboards on the front page of B-R each day. As of this writing it's just got WAR stuff on it, but I'm going to expand it out to more material.

Carousel is caught in mid-motion below in the left column of the front page.

Batting Splits by Defensive Position

Posted by Neil on July 2, 2013

I got a couple of questions about this today, so I thought it would be valuable to highlight this feature in blog-post form.

Essentially, the question was regarding what kind of batting production a specific team has gotten from a given defensive position this season. For example, a user wanted the combined season stats for Yankees players this season, only while playing 3B.

Veteran B-R users will know that to get this information, you need to go to the team's main 2013 stats page, then mouse over the menu option marked "Batting ▼", and choose "Splits". Scroll down until you find the table marked "Defensive Positions", and you'll get a list of every position along with the batting stats from players while they were in the game at that position:

NBA Finals Composite Stats

Posted by Neil on June 28, 2013

With the NBA Finals ending last week, we now have a composite Finals stats page for 2013 here. You can access previous years' composite stats from the Finals (or any other series) by going to the yearly playoffs pages, mousing over the menu option marked "Series ▼", and picking the playoff round in question.

On another related note, you can also access sortable stats from the Finals (single-game, single-season, or career) using the Player Game Finder, choosing "Game Type" = Playoffs, and picking the round you want.
