1992 United States Select Team Roster

Posted by Neil on October 26, 2012

With the Dream Team documentary and book coming out this summer, I've gotten asked several times to provide the roster for the '92 U.S. Select Team that famously defeated the Dream Team before they went to Barcelona for the Olympics. For posterity, here was the roster of that team, which was made up of the top college players of the day:

1992 United States Development Team

Head Coach: George Raveling (University of Southern California)
Assistant Coach: Roy Williams (University of Kansas)
Athletic Trainer: Ron Linfonte (St. John's-NY)
Manager: Dennis Johnson (University of Southern California)

New Server for Basketball-Reference.com and improved CFB, OLY and CBB speeds

Posted by admin on September 14, 2012

BBR has been moved from it's old server (called mikan internally at s-r hq) and now is running on a new server (named lebron, don't blame me, it was Neil's turn to name the new machine). This is a much better machine with more RAM and CPU's, so things should now run much faster and more smoothly than they have in the past. Please let us know if you come across any quirks or problems.

One benefit of this is that CFB, CBB and Olympics sites no longer have to share a server with basketball, hockey and football, so they should see their performance improve as well.

How To “SHARE” S-R Stats

Posted by Neil on August 8, 2012

If you've spent any time at our sites, you've probably seen the "SHARE" command in red text above a table of stats... but maybe you didn't know what that did, or have forgotten how to use it. No worries -- here's a quick rundown of the features you can access by clicking "SHARE":

  • Customize rows & columns - Sharing lets you delete certain rows/columns that you don't want to include in your table. Just click the round 'x' button to delete a specific row/column, or the arrow 'x' to get rid of everything to the right (columns) or directly below (rows) the row/column in question.
  • Export as an HTML table - Clicking 'html
' gives you code to embed the table onto your site (you can even choose to keep S-R's inline style formatting).
  • Get a link - Choosing Link URL creates an SR tiny URL specifically for the table you created, which can easily be sent to others via twitter or directly linked at your blog.
  • Export as bbcode - This option lets you copy-and-paste the table into most bulletin board formats.
  • Export into a javascript widget - This will give you code to embed the static table on your site via a js widget. (Note: The 'Embed' option next to 'SHARE' allows you to do this as well, but as a constantly-updated table instead of a static one.)
  • Export as an iframe - For those who prefer to embed the table within an inline frame.
  • Export into preformatted text or CSV
  • Convert table to Wiki formatting - This will turn the table into a format suitable for sites like Wikipedia.

These features are currently active at all Sports-Reference sites except Hockey-Reference, which will be updated either this week or next. Happy sharing!

Wanted: Pro-Football-Reference Usability Testers

Posted by Neil on July 24, 2012

Attention readers in the Philly area -- we need users like you to come in and help us improve our sites!

If you're in the vicinity -- our HQ is located in the Mt. Airy section of northwest Philadelphia -- and can spare an hour next week to help us test out some PFR Play Index features (we'll even pay you $50 for your time), please email me your name and a contact phone number.

We are looking for 3 testers, so we may not be able to use everyone. Please remember testing will be done in Philadelphia only.

Thanks for your help!

SR/CBB: Box Score For Every NCAA Tournament Game

Posted by Justin Kubatko on March 15, 2012

Today I am pleased to announce that College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com now has a box score for every game played in NCAA tournament history. Here are a few examples:

These box scores are not complete, as there are many instances where certain statistics are missing, but we will do our best to fill in the blanks as we find other sources.

For now you can access these box scores from the NCAA Tournament brackets in the Postseason section, but I am working on integrating this information into other areas of the site.

CBB: Use Our Adjusted Power Ratings to Fill Out Your Brackets

Posted by Neil on March 14, 2012

At the beginning of the 2011-12 NCAA Basketball season, we began to calculate Adjusted Offensive and Defensive Ratings for each team. In a nutshell, these ratings measure a team's offensive and defensive abilities independent of the pace at which they play. Since raw PPG totals can be greatly influenced by how many possessions a team has to score and defend, per-possession metrics more accurately reflect a team's true skill levels (pace is largely a choice, and it has almost no correlation to how good a team is at scoring and defending on a per-possession basis).

Here were the best teams during the regular season by adjusted net rating (adjusted Offensive Rating minus adjusted Defensive Rating):

Sports-Reference.com Widgets – Our Stats, Your Site

Posted by admin on February 29, 2012

Sports-Reference.com Widgets - Our Stats, Your Site

We've just launched the first stage of our new Sports Reference Widget tool. By clicking the "Embed" tooltip just above any stats table on the site you can now get the code to add our daily updated stats to your site.

See the widgets page for a description of the various features.

We've always had this option with our "Share" tool, but the widgets have the advantage that they'll update daily as our stats pages update.

In the future, we expect to launch additional widgets, like milestone countdowns, division standings, team and league leaders and more. Any suggestions will certainly be considered.
