NY Times: Early Indicators Point to Stellar Season for 76ers

Posted by Justin Kubatko on January 30, 2012

I forgot to mention this last week, but I'll be writing for the New York Times again this season. My first piece was on the hot start of the Philadelphia 76ers:

Early Indicators Point to Stellar Season for 76ers

Although this particular column did not appear in print, future columns should appear in the Friday edition of the paper.

Box Score For Every Game in NBA History

Posted by Justin Kubatko on January 24, 2012

Today I am pleased to announce that Basketball-Reference.com now has a box score for every game played in NBA history. Here are a few examples:

Now before you get too excited, let me explain: the box scores from 1946-47 through 1984-85 are scans of actual box scores. What that means is that we don't have those games in our database, so you can't search for things like the most points scored by a player during the the 1971-72 NBA season. I should also note that almost all of these box scores are abbreviated, i.e., they only contain field goals, free throws, and points for the players. That said, I think this is a valuable addition to the site that will be enjoyed by many.

I would be remiss in not thanking Dick Pfander, who did the lion's share of the work for this project. Several years ago we were referred to Dick by a third party. At first it sounded like an urban legend. I mean seriously, someone had made a scan of every box score for every game in NBA history? To our surprise, Dick had in fact done just that. Many thanks to Dick for his outstanding work.

Of course, it is our goal to one day have these games in a database-friendly format. However, given that the process would require a significant amount of data entry we're still thinking about the best way to accomplish that task. Until then, we hope you enjoy this new feature, and as always please let us know if you have any comments or questions.

Why We Oppose #SOPA

Posted by admin on January 18, 2012

Baseball-Reference.com is blacking out our logo today to make you aware of a law that will soon be before Congress that could dramatically affect innovation and freedom on the internet. SOPA and PIPA will soon be before Congress and these laws will dramatically alter the current balance of power between copyright holders and the rights of users and website creators.

Sports Reference believes that intellectual property should be protected (our livelihoods depend on it), but these proposed laws go way, way, way too far in trying to stop piracy. A sane, reasoned approach to piracy is what is needed, and these laws proposed by the Movie and Recording Industry would reduce innovation on the internet. They want to return to the 1980's. Do you want sports statistics information to return to the 1980's?

How could SOPA and PIPA hurt Sports Reference LLC?

SOPA and PIPA are a threat to Sports Reference in many ways. For example, in its current form, SOPA would require Sports Reference to actively monitor every site we link to, to ensure it doesn't host infringing content. Even a link to an infringing site could put us in jeopardy of being forced offline.

Links to more information and steps you can take to oppose these laws from Google and Wikipedia.

Sports Reference Mobile Sites: Baseball, Football, Basketball, and Hockey

Posted by admin on December 24, 2011

Our four mobile sites can help you out whenever you are away from home and looking up stats at the parents' house or when you're out with friends or just too lazy to reach the computer.

Almost all of the stats available on the full sites are available through the mobile site, but in a format optimized for your smartphone or tablet. And you can easily switch back to the full site if you prefer. You can even add them to your phone's home screen just like an app (instructions are on the site's home pages).
