We get asked this question a lot, and unfortunately it's not currently possible to find the answer via the Play Index, so I decided to put up a leaderboard once and for all. The most recent version of the question comes from BBR user Reggie:
I’ve seen references on here to games where two teammates scored 40 or more in the same game. But which teammates combined to score the most points in any game? [...]
One game that I remember very well as a Mavericks fan, which is often overlooked, was the overtime game they won at Chicago on November 13, 1994. That was the game where Jamal Mashburn hit for 50 and Jim Jackson went for 38, the two scoring 88 of the 124 points that night in the four point Mavs victory.
Since we have complete box scores (1985-86), here are the 200 most potent scoring duos in a single NBA game:

A little over a year ago we announced that we had posted copies of every box score in NBA history. However, since these box scores were scans we could not create player game logs, compute player splits, etc. As we said in that post, it is our goal to one day have all of these games in a database-friendly format.
On that note, I'm happy to announce that the work for the 1976-77 to 1979-80 seasons has been completed. Please take some time to check out the box scores, player and team game logs, and player and team splits for the 1976-77, 1977-78, 1978-79, and 1979-80 NBA seasons. Keep in mind that almost all of the scanned box scores are abbreviated (i.e., they only contain field goals, free throws, and points for the players), so there will be many missing values for each game.

We are spinning up a new database server (transitioning from unitas => rice (Jerry)) and will have what I expect to be a minute or so of downtime as we make the switch. I expect to flip the switch at 2:30 pm.

Here is a summary of some recent additions to Basketbal-Reference.com:
- Team depth charts have been added for all NBA & ABA teams from 1973-74 to the present. Assigning positions is more art than science, so we've done the best we could with players who did not have an obvious fit. The positions have been "proofed" back to the 1973-74 season, meaning that Neil and I have gone though the data and made sure that each position for each team has no less than 8 percent of the team's total minutes and no more than 32 percent of the team's total minutes. We are working on other seasons and will add more depth charts as we go.
- A page summarizing Player of the Week award winners has been added to the Awards section. Player of the Week winners have also been added to the season summary pages as well as the player pages.
- A Team Rivalry Finder has been added to the Play Index. This tool will summarize all regular season and/or playoff matchups between two selected franchises.
- The 2012 WNBA stats have finally been added to the WNBA section. My apologies for taking so long to get these stats on the site.
- The 2013 NBA All-Star Game voting results now appear in the All-Star Game section. Also, All-Star Game rosters appear on the 2012-13 NBA season summary page.
That's all for now. Please let us know if you have any comments or questions.

Just a quick note that we've added which hand a player shoots with to their profile pages. Enjoy!

Last night I made some changes to the player lineup pages, team lineup pages, and Lineup Finder, so I'd like to take a minute to describe them here.
On both the player and team lineup pages I have added tables for 2-, 3-, and 4-man player combinations in addition to the table for 5-man lineups. I also added a row at the bottom of each table listing the season average for the team/player, so when you sort the table you can see how the performance of a particular combination compares to the team/player average.
On the Lineup Finder I added an option to select 5-, 4-, 3-, or 2-man combinations. Adding this option made it necessary to restrict the searches to one season at a time (as opposed to five before), but I think the benefits of this change far outweigh the costs necessary to implement it.

College basketball is a difficult sport for statisticians. There are currently 347 Division I programs, more than 11 times the number of NBA teams. Due in part to the large number of teams, complete college basketball stats are hard to come by (we currently have complete Division I stats back to the 1998-99 season).
We have had scans of historical college basketball stat sheets for some time, but the process to get them on the site was a bit laborious. However, I happy to announce today that we have added scans of stat sheets for 326 different schools, accounting for 8404 team seasons (full inventory after the jump).
Our hope is to one day replace these scans with stat tables that you can sort, etc., but for now we hope you enjoy this addition to the site. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments regarding the site.
