Box Scores for Every Playoff Game in NHL History Added

Posted by Mike Lynch on May 15, 2017

We're happy to announce that we have added box scores for every Stanley Cup Playoff game in NHL history (back to 1918) to Hockey Reference. With this addition, we've also been able to build game logs to player pages covering their entire postseason career. This has also allowed us to create cumulative box scores for every playoff series in history (for example, the 1975 Stanley Cup Final)

For an example of how this impacts player pages, here's Wayne Gretzky's career Stanley Cup Playoffs game log. You'll notice this now includes his entire career, whereas before this update it only went back to 1988. We've also been able to flesh out postseason scoring logs to cover 1918 to 1987 on player pages (we already had 2006 to present). We hope to add these scoring logs for 1988 to 2005 in the near future. Additionally, the player logs have been incorporated into the Play Index search.

Awesome stuff!!!! However, your post-season game logs don't include Edmonton and Boston's suspended game in the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals. That does create a bit of an issue. Example: when looking for the most points scored in a Stanley Cup Final, Wayne Gretzky is listed as having 11 points when, in fact, his 2 points in the suspended game are included in his official stats which gave him a record tying 13 points in the '88 Finals.

Thank you, Matt. We'll look into that
