Historical Standings Finder

Posted by David Corby on April 10, 2014

Just a note that we've unveiled a new search tool that lets you look up standings for the NBA, ABA, and BAA on any date in history, as well as team and opponent stats as of that date.

Recall those halcyon days when the 4-2 Sixers led the Atlantic Division, or marvel at the post-All Star collapses of the '04-05 season, when the 30-21 Cavaliers, 28-24 Magic, and 26-24 Lakers would all eventually miss the playoffs.

You can reach the search tool by going to www.basketball-reference.com/friv and clicking Historical Standings...

Simply enter the date on which you want to know the standings, choose the league, and click Find Standings. Teams with asterisks were eventual playoff teams.

    Awesome work, David!

Very nice addition. One thing I have noticed is that with the historical standings using the example above with the 76ers at 4-2, it shows 7 teams in the East with asterisks beside them (having clinched Playoff spots). Can this be fixed, no team had clinched a Playoff spot at that stage of the season? It would be great to know historically when teams actually clinched Playoff positions and Division titles.

  3. @Neil - thanks!

@Mark - I'll have to add a note that we're only marking teams that have clinched by the end of the season. Agreed that it would be interesting to show both teams that had clinched at the time of the query, and also teams that would eventually clinch. Will keep that in mind for future additions.
