Follow us on Twitter to Win a Free Baseball-Reference.com Play Index Subscription

7th May 2013

Every Monday, for the rest of the year, we'll be randomly selecting one twitter user who follows any three of our five Sports Reference Twitter accounts to receive a free Baseball-Reference.com Play Index account. If you are already a subscriber, we'll extend you for a year.

Sports Reference uses twitter to tweet out nuggets of information we find, notify users of new features, make occasional commercial messages, and generally enjoy ourselves. Here are the five Sports Reference twitter feeds:

  1. @baseball_ref: Baseball-Reference.com
  2. @bball_ref: Basketball-Reference.com
  3. @pfref: Pro-Football-Reference.com
  4. @hockey_ref: Hockey-Reference.com
  5. @sports_ref: CFB, CBB, Olympics, and Announcements for All Sites

Game Previews

7th May 2013

If you're a Baseball-Reference addict, chances are you've seen the link for our Game Day Previews on the front page of the site. But if not: each morning, we generate preview pages for the day's MLB games.

These pages contain detailed info on the probable starting pitchers (including a list of their most recent starts), recent results for each team, the last 10 head-to-head matchups between the two teams, and active rosters for each team (including platoon splits and head-to-head results against the each member of the opponent's pitching staff/lineup). Be sure to check them out if you're watching the game at the ballpark or at home.

And to keep up with the latest action, you can subscribe to the RSS feed for our previews, or you can sign up to have them delivered to you automatically via e-mail. And if you don't want to sort through the whole league when trying to find your favorite team, you can bookmark the link to your favorite team's page, which gets updated daily for each upcoming game.

Finally, if you want to see who was on a roster at an earlier point in the season, you can call up archived copies of previews for every game this year by using the "Find Date" drop-down menus at the top of the previews portal.

Updates to NBL, D-League, and WNBA Sections

3rd May 2013

I've made some updates to the NBL, D-League, and WNBA sections of Basketball-Reference.com:

  • Each section now has a navigation bar near the top of every page, making it much easier to jump from one subsection to another.
  • A subsection has been added to the WNBA section for WNBA coaches.
  • Basic biographical information has been added for some WNBA players.
  • Footnotes have been added to the NBL standings to note cases where franchises moved or folded, teams had forfeit wins or losses, etc.

Please let us know if you have any question or comments about these changes.

Add Your Blog Posts to PFR Player Pages

2nd May 2013

PFR Player Name Linker / Add your Site to our Player Newsfeeds

It's the offseason, which means lots of news on the player-movement front. That's why we have newsfeeds on the PFR player pages, showing the latest player news from KFFL, injury reports and links to relevant PFR blog posts. If you have a blog or website with an RSS feed you can add your site to relevant player pages as well. Our Player Linker Tool will take your blog posts as you've written them and run them through a program and add links to PFR player pages where appropriate. So while you don't have the resource to create your own player pages for your site, you can treat us as your site's statistics partner, linking Eli Manning's name to our stats or any player all the way back to Y.A. Tittle and Otto Graham.

If the links then appear in your rss feed and you let us know to look for them, we'll pull them out of your feed and then link back to you from Eli's page, or Otto Graham's or whomever you link to.

If you help your users find our great content, we'll help our users find yours. And best of all it is all automated except for one click of an easy-to-install bookmarklet. Check the Player Newsfeeds page for details. This link share will also work for tables you share using the SHARE tooltip found above every stats table on the site.
